Artist Talk: "Creolization: Polish-Haitian Entanglements"
Date: October 29, 2024
Time: 11:00 a.m.
Location: Room 410 (CSU)
Separated by over 5,300 miles, how can Haiti and Poland share a common history? Prof. Jacek J. Kolasiński's lecture will explore the remarkable story of the Poloné Nwa (Black Poles), Polish Legionnaires who were granted citizenship in Haiti by Jean-Jacques Dessalines in 1805. Their journey reflects a process of cultural blending, where diverse influences combine to create something new. This idea, coined by Édouard Glissant to describe the Caribbean's cultural transformations, applies globally—highlighting the power of cross-cultural exchange in shaping identity and history.
This lecture will be given in English and is open to all staff and students.
Prof. Kolasiński is the founding Director of the Ratcliffe Incubator of Art + Design in the FIU College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts, and a Professor of Art at the Art + Art History Department at Florida International University.
