On the 20th of June 2015 as many as 40 bridges in Wroclaw will be converted into living works of art!
Wroclaw's long and complicated history is partly responsible for its beauty and complexity as a city. The river Oder, which rises in the Czech Republic, passes through Poland and forms 187 kilometres of Polish-German border, shapes the city and creates its identity. The story of Wroclaw is a story of twelve islands connected by 112 bridges (220 if we include all types of crossings). Before WW11 there were as many as 303 bridges and footbridges.
During 2015, as part of the build up to European Capital of Culture 2016 celebrations, we hope to invite around 5000 young people, from all around the city and the region, to collaborate on the project "Bridge Builders". The aims of this project are to encourage groups of young people to adopt a bridge that currently exists or existed in the past in Wroclaw and to build a work of art, installed on the bridge over one weekend in June 2015. It will create a new context for the bridge, to a city-wide audience.
The young people will be supported by professional artists or artists groups in their decision making process and during the development of their creative idea. However, it is vital that all the creative ideas come from the young people themselves, who are to remain the main visionaries of the project. We want this project to demonstrate how professional artists can work with Wroclaw's young communities, in order to create an extraordinary event- symbolising the possibilities of civic participation.
