From 29 June in SIC! Gallery BWA Wrocław!
During her foreign residencies and artistic projects, Marzena Krzemińska-Baluch takes a close look at the places and reality surrounding her. She tries to remember not only precise shapes, but also afterimages forming under the eyelids, imprinted by the ambience of the scenery and accompanying moods. She is inspired by Juhani Pallasmaa's words, who wrote: Perception, memory and imagination are in constant interaction; the domain of presence fuses into images of memory and fantasy. We keep constructing an immense city of evocation and remembrance, and all the cities we have visited are precincts in this metropolis of the mind…
Those precincts of remembrance become the artist's way of creating art. She uses glass like skin – a sensation which constituted the beginning of all our experience. She tries to find the process of generating form. The glass medium is a source of my inspiration and challenge, says Marzena Krzemińska-Baluch. I experiment and observe the way it behaves while being shaped. In this way works are created which are much more soaked in air and gravity than in oven fire. The works, minimalistic in colour, are formed into shapes full of unobvious protuberances, creases and fractures resembling delicate water surfaces, subtle horizons of mountain landscapes or even the kind of air movement we feel on our body. Experiencing Marzena's works, says curator Beata Bartecka, is more of a tactile than visual experience following the obvious path of focusing on the hardness and transparency of glass. Her works almost invite you to touch them, to close your eyes and feel them through your skin, which will connect her emotions and memories with ours.
The exhibition Escape to Moments of Solitude is also part of a doctoral project prepared by Marzena Krzemińska-Baluch at Wrocław's Academy of Fine Art. It is accompanied by a monograph which will premiere during the closing of the exhibition.
