This research focuses on utilising raw approaches set forth by various underground movements. The dissertation questions the conventions of spatial arts, redefines space, time, and atmosphere as the field of work, with references to diverse practices that engage in environmental evocation. It explores strategies that enable independent artists to engage spaces more openly and expressively.
The dissertation presents five distinct interventions, each situated in sites chosen for their unique spatial and atmospheric qualities including abandoned, peripheral environments and subcultural venues. Each intervention engages thoughtfully with the site’s temporal and physical characteristics to form an atmosphere that redefines the perception of space and time. While sustaining a consistent artistic language across the series, a combination of tools such as sound, light and shadow, projections, physical objects, and digital live acts is employed. Works convey aspects of dark sublime, melancholy, and isolationism, encouraging mental interaction and reflection as viewers engage with the spatial and emotional qualities of the environments. In addition, pre- and post-event content, visuals, and promotional materials are integrated as part of the overall project, maintaining cohesion with the aesthetic and conceptual approach. The works draw on self-made, DIY, and punk-inspired approaches, emphasizing free-play and resourcefulness.
