Supervisor in the Doctoral School

He is a visual artist, mathematician, and popularizer of science. In his artistic, scientific, and didactic work, he focuses on the cognitive aspects of visual perception, visual imagination, and the role of art in explaining scientific issues. He creates multimedia installations that are inspired mainly by mathematics, physics, and philosophy.

Research interests: visual thinking, visual imagination in scientific discovery, cognitive visual metaphors, analog and discrete information coding systems.

He is an author of scientific articles concerning philosophy, mathematics, and the theory of art. Participant in numerous scientific conferences and artistic exhibitions. The Dean of the Doctoral School at the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design in Wroclaw.

Achievements

1. Winner of the individual Award of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage for scientific achievements (2022).

2. Creator of the idea and participant in the artistic-scientific projects: A!symetria (Wrocław 2021, Kraków 2022, reviewed monography 2021), and Wystawa Wzorowa (Entropia Gallery 2019, kunstmatrix.com 2021).

3. Author of numerous scientific articles, including:

5. Leader of the interdisciplinary research project A visualization of scientific issues – classic examples in new digital media, financed by the Foundation for Polish Science (2014-2016).

Characteristic of the projects and research in which the PhD student is to be subsumed

Scientific and artistic research on the role of image, perception and visual imagination in human cognition, both colloquial and scientific. Examples of research issues: perceptual errors and paradoxes, visual metaphors, relations between image and language, scientific references in visual arts.

- Artistic creation resulting from theoretical analysis and experimental research.

- Participation in the realization of scientific and artistic projects: exhibitions, conferences, monographic publications.

- The doctoral student is expected to have cognitive openness, fluency in using digital tools of editing static and dynamic images, and the ability to present complex content in a visual form. Additional education in a non-artistic discipline will be appreciated.

Characteristic of didactic cooperation between the supervisor and the PhD student

The Ph.D. student will participate in group classes and individual consultations with students in the Visual Cognition Studio. She/He will also be obliged to prepare and conduct own classes. It is recommended to be communicative, open, able to work with a group, and familiar with moving image editing programs (for example Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Animate, or Blender).
