We would like to invite you to the opening of the exhibition “Map/Territory”: Monday November 4th, 16.00, Centre for Applied Arts and Innovation Centre Academy of Art and Design in Wroclaw (4th floor, Traugutta 21).
The exhibition Map/Territory will accompany the international conference Philosophy and Cartography.
There are many relationships between a map and a territory. "A map is not the same as the territory it represents, but if it is right, it acquires a form close enough to the territory – and that makes it useful" (Alfred Korzybski). Even a fictional map works, when it tells forgotten stories, creates mental representations/ images of the territory, or re-evaluates meanings of space/ places.
Making the image of the world used to be equal to appropriating the unknown space, reflecting the imagination, saving the experiences/ memories, even to a "world-making" (Nelson Goodman). It expressed longing for the territory. Now, in the contemporary world of fluent movement, resulting in a kind of on-the-road culture, we experience/ perceive space differently. It seems, that "a map is more interesting than the territory" (Michel Houellebecq), a representation of reality and "artificial life" allure us more than their real counterparts. A map considered as an artifact reproducing or simulating reality as well as a map as metaphor has an irresistible charm to us and attracts us more than a real territory. Such maps liberate the promise of the gaze and open the possibility of a more comprehensive experience/ perception.
A work of art might inaugurate a "new" insight and become a unique map helping the perceiver rediscover her/his place in the complicated landscape of life (Alva Noë).
