Over a period of several months, three groups of students carried out research, project and animation work as part of courses ran by the State Higher School of Culture Managers and Librarians in Wrocław, the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, and Wrocław University of Technology. The title “it was / it is / it will be”, which encapsulates three subjects that were investigated: urban narratives, local identity, and social change, sounds curiously familiar to the visitors to Wrocław Contemporary Museum.
Szczepin and Nadodrze are two housing estates in Wrocław that became the research and project lab for several dozen young people who were supervised by instructors. The effects of their work will be displayed for a week in the 'aviaries' on the fifth floor of MWW.
What is the colour of Szczepin? What does living in Szczepin look like, and what could it look like? An interesting mixture of young people's imagination and "sociological findings" which reveal the colourful stories that fill up a seemingly grey and dull housing estate results in a multitude of ideas about how architects and artists could develop the public spaces.
The exhibition is accompanied by documentation of several-month long animation endeavours to activate the inhabitants of Nadodrze. This housing estate became the venue for social consultations and testing ground for the inhabitants' activeness and determination.
What can we learn about the identity of the inhabitants of these two fragments of Wrocław and their perception of a space which many of us treat as "no man's land"? Come and see with your own eyes.
The collection of narratives will be continued. As part of the exhibition there will be workshops for young people and meetings with initiators of the most interesting urban projects that aim to collect local stories (the "Metropolitanka" project from Gdańsk, and two projects from Warsaw – "MDM" and "tubylo.pl")
